History

Master Choi Yong Sul (1904-1986) was born in Chung Chon province in South Korea.

During the Japanese occupation he was taken, still as a child, to Japan together with is family to work.

In Japan he was Master Sogaku Takeda (1860-1943) student – Sogaku Takeda is the maximum exponent of Daito Ryu Aiki Jutsu School.

This singular Master had as students, among others, Morihei Ueshiba and Do Shin So – founders of Aikido and Shorinji Kenpo, respectively.

The war ends in 1945 and a little bit later Master Choi returns, by boat, to Pusan (South Korea) and he stabilizes him self in Taegu City.

In that time the Korean Martial Arts resurge with power, like for example Taekyun, Subakdo or Tangsudo.

Knowing that leg techniques in Korean Martial Arts are very important he started to gain interest by Taekyun, and other similar styles.

The influence of Taekyun techniques and other Korean styles, led to the introduction of fist and leg techniques, which together with Daito Ryu Aiki Jutsu Science, made Master Choi´s new Martial Art creation, which he named, YU KWON SUL.

Later, in 1948, he stars to teach is art, now with the name of HAPKIDO.
